Keeping soil away from the bottom of your wood siding or trim is important. Soil in contact with unprotected wood is susceptible to water damage and as an entry point for termites.
Soil contact at the base of the siding should be eliminated by removal of soil and re-grading as needed. A preferred gap of 6” (minimum 3-4”) should be maintained. Then re-grade to achieve a proper slope away from foundation. If a proper slope is not possible you might add a swale or ”valley” a few feet away from the foundation that will allow for diversion to a lower area. If grading is not feasible, a sub-surface drain tile may be installed and routed to drain to a lower area. Pavers or stone could be placed above the drain tile.
There is always the possibility of hidden damage once soil is removed from the area. Following the soil removal it is recommended to investigate further.
